It's been a little over a month since we launched Android TweetDeck 1.0. Thanks to a great beta period we were able to deliver a really solid first version of the app. Use cases had been polished out, bugs fixed, but still, there's always more to be done.

Today we're releasing Android TweetDeck 1.0.3 to the market with many of the features we've heard most requested since launch. Included is the ability to manually shorten URLs, change the photo service to Twitpic and more complete support for landscape mode.

Click the device Menu button to change image services or manually shorten a URL.

Change log for 1.0.3:

  • Landscape mode for all update detail views
  • Added support for Twitpic
  • Manual bit.ly shortening
  • Allow for dismissing Places notification
  • Fix faving tweets on 3g in France
  • Allow old style RTs for protected users
  • Support FB Single Sign On
  • Allow users to delete DMs that are sent to them
  • Likes and comments on FB photos should stay in app
  • Several bug fixes and performance improvements

1.0.3 is rolling out to the Android Market now and should be available for everyone running Android 1.6+.

While we think this is the best version of Android TweetDeck yet, it is by no means slowing down in development. High on the priority list is user name auto-complete, ability to upload video, native Facebook image posting and better widgets.

If you're interested in helping us beta test new versions, need help or want to send feedback, please make sure to follow @deckondroid

Top Gun or Top Cat, TweetDeck v0.36 Will Take Your Breath Away - Story From: TweetDeck's posterous

"I feel the need — the need for speed!"
Top Gun

You may have thought that scorching through your Twitter feeds at the speed of an F-14 fighter jet was reserved for just the Mavericks of the world, with their Bomber jackets, Aviator sunglasses and User Stream TweetDecks. And, until today, you would have been right.

But today's the day when everything changes.

You don't need a fighter jet. You don't need Goose in your back seat. You don't even need Kenny Loggins on the stereo.

All you need is to upgrade to the new, consolidated, all-in-one, turbo-charged-by-default TweetDeck v0.36.

The Story so far...

A long time ago in a galaxy - oops sorry, wrong film!

Back in July, Twitter enabled testing of a new way for third party clients to access the service in true real-time. This User Streams API allowed instant delivery of tweets, as opposed to the old API which relied on clients regularly checking for new tweets every few minutes.

To coincide with this launch we introduced a new version of TweetDeck that offered Twitter streams in awesome real-time. Recently, Twitter made the User Streams API fully live, at which point we removed the whitelist from our User Streams TweetDeck version and made it downloadable without having to signup.

Today we are completing the process by finally combining the User Streams Preview version of TweetDeck and the "original" version, to make one consolidated app that can switch between streaming and non-streaming at the flick of a switch.

So now, whether you're a Top Gun or just a top cat, thre is just one version of TweetDeck for you. Simple!

Afterburners are ON

Once you install v0.36, you will be automatically using real-time streaming for Twitter. In this way you can experience first-hand what it means to use TweetDeck in true real-time.

If, however, you dont feel like you can cope with the high-octane, utlimate Twitter experience, then you can easily go back to non-real-time Twitter streams by navigating to Settings > Twitter and unchecking the Enable realtime Twitter streaming checkbox.

With real-time streaming disabled, your TweetDeck will operate just as it previously did. If you change your mind and want to re-enable streaming, just turn this setting back on and your updates will start flowing at top speed once again.

Hints for new recruits

You can't just expect to jump into your F-14 and start buzzing the tower without a few pointers. So here are a few key articles from our support site that should help you understand some of the finer points of streaming updates in TweetDeck.

Other than that, just strap yourself in and enjoy Twitter the way it was meant to be - in TweetDeck and in true real-time!

Not only very cool but *very important* too

Although bringing User Streams into the main app is, in itself, a very cool feature, there is also a very important change in v0.36 that makes this a vital upgrade for everyone.

Twitter is switching to a new way of assigning unique identifiers to each tweet in it's database. This new method, dubbed "Snowflake", has forced us to make some fundamental changes behind the scenes in TweetDeck.

The result of all this techno-jiggery-pokery is that you *must* update to at least v0.36 urgently. If you have not upgraded before 24th November then your TweetDeck will start going very wrong.

Don't say we didn't warn you! :)

Oh, and one more thing...

Also in this build is a bit of very special TweetDeck magic....

We're not letting on exactly what this magic does just yet, but we can tell you that it opens the door to ...

A while ago, as you may recall, Guillermo the TweetDeck bird was travelling and decided that we should make TweetDeck available in lots more languages. Always ready for a challenge, and knowing the dangers of upsetting Guillermo, we set about making this happen. Conrad took control and organised a crack squad of volunteers to help out with the translations, whilst our development team donned their thinking caps and set to work on all the necessary technical bits and bobs to make it work.

And now, after months of hard work from everyone, we are proud to present phase one of the project - the TweetDeck Localisation Preview.

This new version of TweetDeck allows you to use Desktop TweetDeck in any of the following languages:

  • Japanese
  • Dutch
  • Indonesian
  • Portuguese
  • US English
  • UK English

Nice, but when is my language coming?

Don't worry, we will soon be adding Chinese Simplified, Brazilian Portuguese, Italian, French, Spanish, Russian, Korean and German!

Great! Where do I get it?

You can download the Localisation Preview version here: http://www.tweetdeck.com/i18n    (Why "i18n"?)

We have set up a special forum to track any problems specific to the Localisation Preview, so please go here to report any problems or suggestions with regard to the technical operation of the app or any of the translations.

Be aware that this version of TweetDeck is currently NOT using the User Streams API

OK I installed, how do I change the language?

Here's what you will need to do to change the language of the TweetDeck app.

  1. Install the update from the link above
  2. Navigate to Settings > General
  3. Select your language in the drop-down box and click Save on the settings window.
  4. Restart TweetDeck
  5. Remove your columns and then re-add them to see column headings in the correct language

Please note: At this time we are not yet able to offer spelling dictionaries for these languages. We are investigating options here but currently spell-check will still only be in US-English only.

Fantastic job on the translations! Who do I thank?

This whole process wouldn't have been possible without our amazing translators. They have worked day and night over the past few months to ensure that TweetDeck is available in their own language and we cannot thank them enough.

An extra special thanks goes to the language team Leaders:  Shinji Arakawa, Patrick Mackaajj, Reza HasfinadaJosé Airosa

Japanese

  • Shinji Arakawa
  • Mitsuhiro Yoshida
  • Tetz Hakoda
  • Motoko Takano
  • Takamoto Ando
  • Yuya Saito

Dutch

Indonesian

Portuguese

I would like to be a volunteer too, where do I sign?

If you would like to apply to be a volunteer translator, please send an email to localisation@tweetdeck.com with any relevant experience and we will be in touch.

Android TweetDeck 1.0: Ready for Market - Story From: TweetDeck's posterous

Posted by TweetExpert | Posted in TweetDeck | Posted on 13-10-2010

It's been a crazy couple months here at TweetDeck. We announced our public beta of Android TweetDeck on August 12th and since then we've done 11 releases, crushed millions of bugs and listened to a tonne of feedback. Today we're ready to officially launch our Android app and make it available to everyone via the Android Market.

To download the app search the market for "TweetDeck" or click this link from your phone: Android Market (note: beta testers, please uninstall your beta version before downloading 1.0).

For those of you who haven't had the chance to test the beta, Android TweetDeck is a completely reworked UI for managing your social media empire. With the app you can view and post to TwitterFacebook,Foursquare and Buzz. We've tried to innovate as much as possible to deliver a smooth, clean experience while offering more power than any other social mobile client. Updates from all services are viewable in blended Home and Me columns so you can easily keep up-to-date without a lot of jumping around. We've also strived to take what has made TweetDeck a great Twitter client and provide that level of support to the other services. Here's a quick video rundown of app functionality:

Android TweetDeck 1.0 is just the beginning of our new wave of mobile products. We're looking forward to continuing development by better supporting landscape mode, adding deeper Facebook integration, better multiple account support and lots more.

Additionally, we've started developing the new version of TweetDeck for iPhone and iPad. We're modeling the app on the Android version, doing everything from scratch and not holding anything back. Those TweetDeck team members with iPhones are pretty amped about the new stuff. Stay tuned for updates on progress.

We'd like to thank our beta testers (all 36,000 of you!) and invite you to follow @deckondroid to stay on the bleeding edge. It's pretty cool that Android lets us distribute the app outside of the market as it makes testing so much easier. Please follow that account to find out about new test apks and the latest on pre-market releases.

Finally, we thought it would be a cool bonus to provide @fstid's awesome angry android image as a wallpaper for your Android phones. You can grab it from here. Enjoy!

Android Ecosystem Infoporn Overload - Story From: TweetDeck's posterous

As we bring our initial Android TweetDeck beta period to a close, we wanted to quickly reflect on the Android ecosystem and what might be considered extreme fragmentation. To date we've had 36,427 active beta testers and below you can see the massive variety of phones and Android OS versions everyone is running. We were really shocked to see the number of custom roms, crazy phones and general level of customization/hackalicious nature of Android. From our perspective it's pretty cool to have our app work on such a wide variety of devices and Android OS variations.

Desktop TweetDeck – Your BFF Gets An Upgrade - Story From: TweetDeck's posterous

Posted by TweetExpert | Posted in TweetDeck | Posted on 09-09-2010

Tags: , , , , , , , , ,

0

The best friends in life are those that you dont have to see every day. You know how it goes; you keep meaning to catch up, but things get in the way. You’ve missed a few dinner dates because you were out with other friends. But it doesn’t matter, because you know that with your best friend you will just pick up right where you left off, even after such a long time apart.

We like to think of Desktop TweetDeck as your best friend. You have always been there for each other, but just recently you have been busy with your cool new friends on Android. Well, now its time to show a bit of love for your BFF and have that catch-up.

So pull up a chair, grab a coffee and sit down with Desktop TweetDeck v0.35.

In this release we have, of course, fixed a few bugs, but there are also some small, but important, new features. Oh, and we are talking about the normal version of TweetDeck here, not the super-swanky User Streams Preview version. That will be updated soon.

Trending Topics

When you install v0.35, you will have a new Trending Topics column, which pulls topics from Twitter and a description from WhatTheTrend.com. So finally you can keep up with the gossip around the hottest Twitter topics from within your Deck.

You can even click the column header to choose a country from the available list, for closer monitoring of local trends near you.

Smart cross-posting for longer tweets

Sometimes 140 characters just isn't enough to express your love of Justin Beiber. We understand that, and so have made it easier for you to send messages that are longer than 140 characters, without having to faff about with copying and pasting or external websites. Just cross-post to your Twitter and Buzz accounts and TweetDeck will post the start of your message to Twitter along with a link to the full post on Buzz. Clever eh?

Support for t.co shortend URLs

If you hover your mouse over a link shortened with Twitter’s t.co URL shortener you will now see the final destination URL in a small popup window. As Twitter now use this service more and more, this should give you a better idea about the link you are about to visit without actually having to click first.

Easy sign-in

One of the great features of our Android app is the sign-in procedure when using a TweetDeck account. This smooth operation, which automatically imports all the social networking accounts that have been added to your TweetDeck account, has now been added to the desktop app too. So if you ever have to reinstall your TweetDeck, just log in with your TweetDeck account and your other accounts will be automatically added for you.

Posterous Photo Uploading

We have added Posterous as a photo uploading serivce so you can now send photos to your default Posterous blog direct from TweetDeck. A small, but much-requested feature, now baked right into the app.

The full changelog for this release can be found on our support site.

It’s been good to catch up, lets do it again soon eh?

Today we are releasing a new version of Echofon for Mac which includes support for Twitter's new User Streams API. We released a preview of this feature for registered users a while back and today we are excited to release it for all users.

In case you've forgotten, the User Streams API allows Echofon to show Tweets instantly when they are received, no need to refresh your timeline. It's amazingly fast! In addition, events show up in the timeline, these events include things like follows and favorites.

If you are an Echofon for Mac user you can update by choosing "Check for Update" from the "Echofon" menu. If you aren't using Echofon on your Mac yet, go to our download page.
